Rugby Sevens Glossary

chip and chase (chp) and (chs) v.Êto make a short high kick over the opposition with the intentions of out running defenders and retaining possession

grubber (grbbr) n. a ball that is kicked point down creating an awkward bounce with the purpose of resulting in a chase situation

lineout (lnout) n. used to restart play after the ball has gone out of bounds over the sideline, in which forwards of both teams line up in two lines perpendicular to the side line, at least one meter apart. A player on the team with possession throws the ball between the lines while members of both teams jump and are lifted into the air in an attempt to gain possession

maul (ml) n.Êwhen players meet in contention for possession of the ball while the ball carrier is on their feet

pitch (pch) n.Êthe field upon which a rugby match is played

ruck (rk) n. when players meet in contention for possession of the ball after the ball has gone to ground

scrum (skrm) n.Êused to restart play after minor infractions, three forwards face off for contention of the ball

try n.Êthe name given to a score, similar to a touchdown in American football, where the ball is brought into the tri zone (similar to a football end zone) where the ball must be touched down on the ground while in controlled possession of the scorer

positions

center: wears No. 6; powerful runner on attack and defense; stereotypically known as a dependable tackler and strong offensive runner through contact

flyhalf:Êwears No. 5; back player to make the calls for the back line, first to receive the ball from scrumhalf and in charge of distributing in offensive play

hooker:Êwears No. 2; forward whose jobs include "hooking" or kicking the ball backwards in a scrum to present the ball to the scrum half.ÊAlso responsible for throwing the ball in from the sideline during a lineout

prop:Êeither of the two forwards normally wearing No. 1 or No. 3; responsibilities are to support the hooker during scrums and lift jumpers during lineouts

scrumhalf:Êsimilar to QB in American football wears No. 4; responsible for getting the ball from the scrum and dispensing it out to the backs who can then run up the field offensively with the ball

wing:Êwears No. 7; very fast runner; a finisher of sorts. A player in the back line who remains out wide near the sideline waiting for the ball to make breakaway runs as well as making aggressive cuts through the center of the field looking for holes to score through.
