Marketing Evil

“Surprise and Delight.”

A giant projection awakens Gotham by illuminating the side of a once sleeping building. Does Commissioner Gordon need a certain superhero's help? Not this time. Evil has claimed the power of projection—the Batsignal has been traded in for Starbucks' mermaid logo.

On Thursday world superpower Starbucks projected giant advertisements on local landmarks, including Grand Central Terminal. The guerilla advertising campaign with the Orwellian handle "Surprise and Delight" is legal because the city has no zoning laws prohibiting such displays. You don't even need the permission of the building owner.

Perhaps it’s no surprise that Thursday also marked the return of the mysterious sweet smell, previously scented in lower Manhattan  and Astoria in late October. The second wave of the unexplained sweet scent (some describe it as "syrupy" or "pancake-like") was reported in Midtown all the way up to the Upper East and West Sides. More guerilla marketing?
