NY DOORMEN LOCKDOWN AVERTED

By Steve McCauley

The threat of a doorman strike came and went last week without any of the anxiety or accusations of the transit strike back in December. Thursday night, hours away from the contract expiring, the workers and the building owners were

still at odds with each other. The workers demanded no change in their health coverage and an immediate raise, while the owners were looking to freeze wages for a year and have the workers pick up some of their own healthcare expenses. Ultimately, neither side got exactly what they wanted. The workers will get their raise, but they’ll have to wait six months for it; and the owners will have to continue picking up the full tab for health. No one was elated with the results, but they found a middle ground. Meanwhile, Roger Toussaint is going to jail, the TWU contract is still being argued and MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow is driving a custom-made Ferrari.
