Are you a closet tap dance enthusiast? Can’t wait to demonstrate your talent amongst others who share a passion for noisy shoes? Where does such a place of acceptance and unity exist, you ask? Why, NYC of course. That’s right, it’s that special time of year when our great and diverse metropolis is dedicated to all the nutty tap-tap-tappers, and thus it shall be proclaimed: Tap City. This annual tap dance extravaganza offers two weeks of classes for and performances by the tap-tastic of all ages, levels and styles. The festivities begin with an opening weekend tap jam (July 9 at 8 p.m.) at Pier 63 Maritime. Be sure to bring your shoes so you can party with your fellow tap-addicts. Don’t worry if you’re a novice, there’s a cash bar to loosen you up so you can get down. Tap City is all about bringing people together to celebrate life through dance (just like those kids in Footloose always wanted!). So no matter your age, race, gender or background, no matter if you’re a connoisseur or an amateur, you’ll find a home in Tap City. So as long as you’re not a pauper—as any New Yorker will tell you, community don’t come cheap.
