Perils of Being a Native ny'er

A report from the city’s Health Department finds foreign-born New Yorkers are generally healthier than native New Yorkers. Apparently, immigrants are less likely to smoke, drink and eat heavily, or contract HIV. Despite being generally healthier, foreign-born New Yorkers have a harder time gaining access to healthcare. Perhaps that’s why they typically arrive in New York more robust than U.S. natives but don’t stay that way. Over time, they succumb to the same sloth-like behavior the rest of us exhibit, including poor eating habits and lack of exercise. The report suggests four ways the city can help immigrants remain healthy despite the work hard/play hard Manhattan lifestyle: break down cultural barriers, make healthcare more attainable, better inform those who are undocumented and, lastly, direct resources towards certain at-risk groups. Wait, didn’t they just conclude that all of New York is at risk? Well, I guess our tendency to binge and bed-hop isn’t in our blood after all, it’s in the water.
