NO MORE BUS FONDLING
By Kari Milchman
Ten percent of the MTA’s bus fleet will be outfitted with surveillance cameras by the end of the month. Interior cameras will monitor the front and back doors as well as the passenger areas, and one camera will face forward to record the driver’s POV of the street. The footage will be stored for up to 90 days and viewed later by law enforcement, in case of a crime or terrorist attack. Phew, I’m glad investigators will know where to turn after little Susie gets flashed. The hope is that the technology will be upgraded for live video transmissions so cops will actually have a shot at preventing crimes. So is the MTA trying to save its passengers or save its ass? I think we all know what this really means: beware riders, all your nasty little in-transit habits will now be caught on tape. If the system proves successful, it’ll be expanded, ultimately including the entire 4,500 bus fleet. And only 12 years after Speed premiered, not bad.
