Mayor Michael Bloomberg will hold a fund-raiser on November 1st at his Upper East Side home for Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman’s re-election campaign. Bloomberg’s camp says the Republican mayor “thinks the world of Senator Lieberman because he speaks his mind and does what he thinks is right.” Lieberman, a Connecticut senator for 18 years, was dealt a tough blow last month when he lost his home state’s primary to Ned Lamont, a Greenwich businessman who pulled in voters by emphasizing Lieberman’s support for the war in Iraq. Lieberman will now run as an Independent in the November 2006 election, a choice that has upset many Democrats who feel he could pull votes away from the Democratic Party. Bloomberg’s fund-raiser will be co-chaired by former Republican Senator Alfonse D’Amato and former Democratic Mayor Ed Koch. The event probably isn’t BYOB, but guests should come prepared with their own lampshade hats because it’s safe to assume there won’t be enough for everyone when things get bumpin’.
