Conservatives called 1920s Berlin decadent. But basically, we’re talking about the predecessor to NYC, where burgeoning art, literature and free-thought briefly thrived. Now, Tiger, Muses and Jasmine, a 70-minute musical theater performance, will transport you back to a time of creativity (hello, Dada), political upheaval (hello, Communism) and overt sexuality (hello, Josephine Baker). Micaela Leon is the writer and star of this one-woman show and is, German herself—so you know this’ll be authentic. Back when boundaries of taste and decency still existed, men were pushing them via modernist philosophy while women were breaking them both on stage and in their personal lives. See some of these revolutionary women of the Weimar Republic, like Anita Berber, Marlene Dietrich and Valeska Gert, come to life to the music of Hollaender, Spoliansky, Eisler and Weill before Tiger, Muses and Jasmine goes the way of the roaring ’20s. There’s nothing like seeing what the Nazis considered depraved to realize how lucky we are to be able to say, do and fuck anything we want. Right?
