Everyone's Scared, Nobody Has The Answer

The results of a CBS News/New York Times poll came in last Wednesday, revealing that a vast majority (76 percent) of Americans believe Islamic fundamentalism to be a real and rising threat. But the study also indicates that most U.S. citizens are divided as to how our nation should deal with the perceived threat. Most respondents opined that groups like al Qaeda want to destroy the United States. 47 percent agreed with President Bush that the country is better off confronting terrorist groups and states in the Middle East, while 45 percent said the U.S. will be safer if it minds its own business. In terms of the treatment of POWs, 63 percent said that the United States should follow international agreements while 32 percent thought the country should do what it thinks is right, regardless of what other nations think. Basically, a fairly substantial number of Americans contend that the United States should do whatever it wants. As for George W., his approval rating is widely unchanged from earlier this year at 37 percent supporting his policies and 56 percent disapproving.
