An Episcopal priest traded in his collar for a protest sign at last Tuesday’s anti-Bush rally. Father Luis Barrios was arrested for assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct after trying to storm the barricade surrounding the UN headquarters during George W. Bush’s appearance before the General Assembly. Among the 15 protesters arrested that day, Barrios was the only man of the cloth and claimed his aggressive opposition towards Bush was his spiritual duty to his ministry and to God. The father’s nod to the Almighty will likely confuse Bush, who’ll be sure to bring it up to God during their next policy-planning meeting.
Further uptown, a different priest went behind bars for a crime he couldn’t as easily justify by citing an allegiance to God: grand larceny. For those who’ve ever wondered where your dollars go after you drop them into that donation basket, in the case of St. John the Martyr Church in Upper East Side, they went straight into the pocket of Monsignor John Woolsey. The shamed priest reportedly splurged on luxury golf vacations and cosmetic dentistry, all on the congregation’s dime. He was accused of stealing as much as $800,000 in church funds and just began a one-to-four year prison term. This extended incarceration is likely to wreak untold damages to both his clerical career and golf handicap.
