This past Monday, New York City’s Board of Health held a public hearing regarding Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal to make the City the first in the United States to ban trans fats from restaurants. The prohibition on the bad cholesterol-making, artery-clogging, heart disease-causing stuff is the Bloomberg administration’s most aggressive health policy since the smoking ban—both thanks to health commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden. The average American eats nearly five pounds worth of artificial trans fat per year, despite the fact that city health officials claim consuming it is as unhealthy as consuming spoiled food or—gasp—rodent droppings. Ew. Nevertheless, many local restaurant owners are loath to discontinue use of the stuff. Gearing up for the hearing, they made it clear that they will fight to the death for their right to use trans fats. But chains like KFC and Wendy’s have already announced a switch to zero-trans-fat oils. Apparently, fast food nation cares more about its diner’s health than its own financial burden. Riiight.
