Cuban-born composer and conductor Tania León has accomplished a lot throughout her long career, she contributed with recent Latin Grammy winner Michel Camilo, composed piano pieces that combine her Cuban roots with the European classical tradition and even wrote a libretto for an opera (Scourge of Hyacinths, based on a radio play by Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka). For her latest endeavor, Reflections, she was commissioned to create a new show based on the poetry of Rita Dove to be presented at The Gatehouse, Harlem Stages’ gorgeous new multimillion-dollar performance venue renovated from a water pumping station. The music on this show, which features soprano Tamara Haskin and a chamber ensemble, reflects not only the beauty of Dove’s words, but also focuses on León’s own ever-present Caribbean roots. The evening is completed with a presentation from León’s repertoire with a cappella sextet The Western Wind, Orlando “Puntilla” Rios and his Nueva Generación and pianist Jade Simmons.
Through Nov. 18. The Gatehouse, 150 Convent Ave. (at W. 135th St.), 212-650-7100; 7:30, $35.
