Cinema Show

Don’t fear sticker shock as you ascend the sweeping circular staircase in Hermès’ posh four-story Madison Avenue boutique. At the top floor, past all of the gleaming cases exhibiting pricey silk scarves and leather goods, you’ll find Hermès Gallery. Admission to this art realm is absolutely free and, at the same time, priceless—especially during November’s month-long MoMA presentation of several original silent movies and 376 movie stills from its fabulous film archives, titled Still Moving. Gallery walls—painted peaceful blue in an old-fashioned kinetoscope parlor style—are outfitted with sleek LCD screens labeled “A” through “H,” each projecting themed cycles of images running from 72 seconds (amazing early Edison footage of Coney Island) to 27 minutes (“Faces and Looks” stills dated 1903 to 2000). “The Great Train Robbery” (1904), shown in its 12-minute entirety, has original color tint highlights. Give yourself at least an hour to enjoy this extraordinary exhibit. Go by yourself to reflect on the evolution of cinema, or take film buff friends whose trivia banter will add to the fun.

Through Dec. 9. Hermès, 691 Madison Ave. (at 62nd St.), 212-751-3181. Mon.-Wed., Fri.& Sat., 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Thurs. 10 a.m.-7 p.m., free.
