FREAKS BEGONE
By Christine Werthman
A plan is in the works to revamp Coney Island by 2011. Builders for the Thor Equities development company hope to rebuild 10 acres of the trashy-charmer's boardwalk into a classier, family-friendly area, complete with indoor water park, roller coaster and movie theaters. This looming $1.5-billion-cleanup sounds similar to the pending $16-million-renovations to Washington Square Park, which include a plan to shift the central fountain in line with the Washington Square arch. With all of these cleaning measures underway, it looks like NYC’s freaky people will have to find themselves a new place to roam; but the city would do well to ease up on straightening out and polishing up its crooked quirks while it still has some unvarnished character left.
