KEEP FAT CATS OUT OF DUMBO

By Kari Milchman

As big, mean corporations continue to take over, and the poor, little mom and pop underdogs are driven out, one man will fight for the city’s honor. Lucky for residents of DUMBO, David Walentas controls nearly 75 percent of this Brooklyn neighborhood, and he happens to hate chains, franchises and generally all big business. Unfortunately, he doesn’t own the building that’s home to a new Starbucks Coffee Co. branch. But one defeat will not stop this real estate mogul—I mean angel. Walentas has taken a vow to keep DUMBO free of ubiquity, or at least the part some have termed “Walentasville.” Now bent on keeping Duane Reade out of his buildings in favor of an indie pharmacy, Walentas tells his local paper (The Brooklyn Papers) that he’ll sell at a rate far below market but clarifies, “I’m no do-gooder. I want to increase the value of the entire neighborhood, not just one space.” But, hey, sometimes egotism and altruism go hand in hand.
