GOVERNMENT-SANCTIONED WASTES OF TIME

By Doug Black

Recent governmental efforts have focused on some absurdly inconsequential activities. Celebrities like Robert De Niro, Regis Philbin and Montel Williams descended on JFK High School recently to promote the importance of the hallowed institution of jury duty. On the 10th anniversary of Juror Appreciation Day, the celebs leveraged their fame in hopes of instilling students with an appreciation for the tiresome chore. Also, a recent report by Time’s Up, a grassroots environmental organization, claims that the city has spent more than $1.3 million in taxpayers’ money over the past two years on policing Critical Mass, a monthly bike ride in support of cyclists' rights. Activists say the police presence is aggressive and unnecessary, claiming the money would be better spent on bigger problems. Maybe then we could use the resulting funds to counter unlicensed jugglers in Washington Square and other real threats to the city.
