SCIENTIFIC SNAG
By Christine Werthman
New York City school children might not be destined for lab coats. This month, the National Assessment of Educational Progress reported that most NYC school kids failed to master basic science concepts on an exam given to fourth- and eighth-graders in the country’s 10 largest school districts. About 54 percent of NYC students in grade four and 64 percent of NYC students in grade eight tested below the basic level of scientific understanding. If NYC doesn’t get it together soon, all of its school kids could be in danger of turning into artists, writers, actors and other creative types: An October study by the Department of Education revealed that NYC students also began slipping in their math grades as they progressed from third to eighth grade. Sounds like it's time for journalism school!
