A KINDER, GENTLER NYC
By Doug Black
Who ever said chivalry is dead? Some goodhearted spirits recently displayed genuine concern for their neighbors in the Big Apple. When people noticed a 73-year-old man floating in the Hudson River near a Holland Tunnel ventilator tower, they notified authorities immediately. A team of FDNY rescue workers arrived and successfully pulled the man from the 50-degree waters about 100 yards off shore. While the elderly man was likely grateful to the good samaritans for saving his life, it’ll take more than a few showers to part with the lingering Hudson River musk. Also, three Englishmen—appropriately dressed as Robin Hoods and Little John—tossed a thousand dollars in one and five-dollar bills to frenzied masses in Washington Square Park on a recent afternoon. The act was an attempt to encourage more courtesy in mankind, but hordes of New Yorkers viciously trampling over children to grab at dollar bills seems much more medieval than the Hoods may have intended.
