CAPITALISM WORKS!

By Kari Milchman

We don’t want to shock any of you, but not everyone gets to partake in the wave of bigger and better here in the “new” NYC. According to the New York City Coalition Against Hunger (NYCCAH), the number of New Yorkers relying on food handouts has significantly risen over the past three years. The NYCCAH reports that over 15 percent of city residents lived in households lacking the income to afford a sufficient supply of food from 2003 to 2005, up from 14 percent in the 2000 to 2003 period. New York is the only U.S. state to register a simultaneous increase in both poverty rates and personal wealth. This increase in inequality may sadden those who believe in the hallowed notion of modern egalitarianism, but—unfortunately—this is just capitalism at its finest. Ain’t it grand?
