TOXIC TURKEY

By Christine Werthman

The Ohio-based HoneyBaked Foods Inc. recalled nearly 47,000 pounds of ham and turkey products—on Saturday. Yes, the timely announcement that the products could contain listeria came two days after Thanksgiving. Listeria is a bacteria found in undercooked meat or poultry, and eating a contaminated food can lead to diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea and fever, especially in young children and the elderly. The company’s website says the potentially harmful hams and turkeys were sold via catalogue and online between Sept. 5 to Nov. 13. So to all of those early birds out there who just had to order their Thanksgiving meals ahead of time, here’s hoping your turkey day was not vomit inducing.
