CANINE COMMUTERS

By Doug Black

The NYPD is showing some tough love by releasing a team of 4-legged beasts into the subway system. As part of their new K-9 unit, city police recently introduced German Shepherds to MTA trains and stations, but they swear it’s for our own good. As many as 27 dogs are slated to comprise the new anti-terror effort, in which the furry officers are expected to sniff out bombs while providing a visual deterrent to all other miscreants. Qualified canines spent 18 weeks in training and learned to keep focused amid the sounds and odors unique to mass transportation. For all of our sake, let’s hope trainers schooled pups in the subtle art of sniffing out explosives marked by pervasive urine scent.
