CHRISTMAS DJ MARATHON
By Joe Pompeo
There’s something very Christmasy about ’60s soul music; maybe because so much of it is bright and happy and makes you want to be nice to everybody. Or it could just be the fact that so many soul singers released Christmas albums. Whatever it is, the Subway Soul Club has the right idea with its annual Christmas DJ Marathon, which also rings in the popular monthly dance party’s fifth anniversary. Subway Soul was founded in 2001 by British hostess Lady Dawn, who moved the party to the popular East Village spot Rififi the following year. The event boasts a roster of 36 prominent guest DJs from throughout the world, as many as 15 of which will grace Rififi’s turn tables on Dec. 16, spinning everything from Motown gems, to “floor fillers,” to those rare Northern Soul 45s that sell for like, $5,000 on eBay. If you go, be sure to mash one up for Santa.
Dec. 16. Rififi, 332 E. 11th St. (betw. 1st & 2nd Aves.), 212-677-1027; 10 p.m.-4 a.m., free.
