RALLY ROUND

By Christine Werthman

Supporters of Sean Bell—the slain would-be groom—protested outside of NYPD headquarters last week, calling for an end to excessive NYPD force against the black community. Another protest, titled “Day of Outrage,” is scheduled for Dec. 22 on Wall Street. In other protest news, Cindy Sheehan went on trial last week in New York City and was convicted Monday of allegedly “trespassing” at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations on March 6. Lawyers for Sheehan—the infamous anti-war mother who camped outside of President George W. Bush’s Texas ranch after her son was killed in Iraq—say she and three other women were met with hostility when they and fellow protestors came to the mission to deliver an anti-war petition containing over 70,000 signatures. Sheehan’s lawyer, Robert Gottlieb, says the building’s staff members locked the doors and police officers manhandled some of the women when they refused to leave. Assistant District Attorney Caroline Han told the jury that the women were arrested for refusing to recognize the rights of others. Apparently, the mission’s staff members have the right to ignore the voices of concerned members of the public—comforting, isn’t it?
