STRAWBERRY YIELDS

By Christine Werthman

John Lennon was a music man, but his Strawberry Fields memorial is no place for songs. The New York Civil Liberties Union wrote a letter to the Parks Department last week, requesting the lifting of a music ban at the memorial, but the Parks Department reportedly denied the removal. “Strawberry Fields is designated as a quiet zone,” says Amelia Alonso, public relations manager for the Central Park Conservancy. While most of Central Park is open to music, certain areas, like Strawberry Fields, are reserved for “quiet enjoyment,” which means no musical instruments and no radios without headphones—yes, hippies, no acoustic guitar circles and never-ending “Imagine” sing-a-longs for you. The current rule permits music only twice annually at John Lennon vigils, and the petition came on the eve of the anniversary of Lennon’s Dec. 8, 1980 murder. Oh Parks Department: “How Do You Sleep?”
