GAY JEWS DON’T SCHTUP

By Kari Milchman

You know when you bring home your fiancé but your parents won’t let you sleep in the same bed, even though they know you “do it” on a fairly regular basis? Well, such denial came into play at a meeting last Wednesday in New York City when the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards voted to permit the ordination of openly gay rabbis and to allow congregations to hold commitment ceremonies for same-sex couples but … the committee somehow also decided to uphold the traditional belief that homosexuality is wrong. The committee was considering five separate proposals regarding how the Conservative movement should treat issues related to homosexuality. Had an absolute majority agreed, all restrictions placed on gay “activity” (like fashioning window drapes, right?) would have been lifted. However, the divided ruling resulted in the determination that the biblical ban on male sodomy will be upheld but that homosexual love (not lovin’) is acceptable. Back in less enlightened times—1992—the panel voted 19 to 3, with one abstention, that Jewish law barred openly gay students from enrolling in seminaries and prohibited rabbis from officiating at gay union ceremonies. One small step for gays, one giant step for Judaism.
