CRIME BLOTTER

Shady Salesmen

Industrious criminals can utilize almost any profession, but they can’t always get away with it. A commercial fisherman was recently caught with almost 1,000 pounds of contaminated and rare fish that he caught in the mercury-rich waters off the coast of Rockaway Beach in Queens. In addition to fishing in the banned waters, 54-year-old Francis Sabatino scored the maritime hat trick by collecting two more offenses for fishing without a license and out of season. He had planned to sell his toxic catch but instead, conservation officers apprehended him when he docked, and he now faces up to four years in prison. For the moment, the elusive Atlantic sturgeon can once again navigate its polluted habitat in peace.

A local community college professor was also busted for unjustly pushing his products—in this case, grades. Elvin Escano, a 46-year-old computer science instructor at LaGuardia Community College, was nabbed after a six-month investigation turned up more than 100 allegations of tampered grades. He is accused of allegedly trading better marks for gifts, such as wine or cash payments ranging from $200 to $2,500. He’s since been held on $100,000 bail and is awaiting his trial. In the meantime, officials are keeping a close watch to make sure Escano doesn’t offer the judge a sterling report card in exchange for a lighter sentence.
