HARD KNOCK LIFE

By Kari Milchman

The Business Council of New York State Inc.’s Public Policy Institute has released a report revealing that New Yorkers spend $35 billion more annually than Americans elsewhere in the country due to myriad government related costs of living and doing business. Property taxes alone cost New York residents and businesses $8 billion more than their neighbors in other states, and workers’ compensation adds another $1.3 billion to their uniquely New York tab. The average price for electricity in New York is 11.86 cents per kilowatt, per hour, whereas it’s 7.49 cents in the rest of the United States. The institute stated that the additional costs burdening New Yorkers adds up to an average sum of $1,830 per year, per state resident. That’s a whole lotta dough just so we can proudly call ourselves New Yorkers; why, it’s almost enough to move to Jersey (almost). But for all our monetary woes, at least we can eat meat from a cart to calm our festering ulcers.
