GREEN THUMB

By Doug Black

Recently added to the list of irrational parental concerns is the worry that children might lose their digits. At the Macy’s store in Herald Square, a two-year-old boy lost his thumb to an unforgiving escalator. While doing some Christmas shopping with his mother, Michael Grateraux took an unexpected spill and got his thumb caught in the mechanical stairs. The finger was completely removed, which only added to the mass hysteria of Macy’s during the holidays. Similarly, in Brooklyn, a kindergartener parted ways with a portion of his finger. When his teacher at P.S. 270 carelessly slammed a door, it amputated the tip of his index finger. He was rushed to the hospital, where luckily, doctors were able to stitch it back on. Now the student has a full hand and a particularly macabre show-and-tell item.
