BITE BE GONE
By Natalie Dolce
Remember NYC Councilman Peter Vallone Jr.? He’s the politician who first became known as a NYC graffiti-hater, then attempted to imprison parents who let their kids drink in the privacy of their own homes and now he’s on to another hair-brained scheme. He wants to overturn a state law and ban pit bulls from NYC. His newest attention-getting legislation is to have New York join cities like Kansas City, Denver and Miami who have already repealed the state law prohibiting breed-specific legislation and ban pit bulls from pet-owning city residents in the five boroughs. He proposed on Dec. 26, to classify pit bulls as a weapon of choice of drug dealers and gangs seeking to intimidate and terrorize neighborhoods. Although the ban would not apply to current owners, it would ban future canines from being sold or bred in the city. A Long Island animal shelter said if NYC goes forward with this plan, thousands of dogs will die. They added that pit bulls are wonderful family pets, but irresponsible owners make them vicious. Vallone, who is not yet sure how the repealed legislation would apply to mixed breeds, is pushing for a City Council hearing early in the new year. According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, there were 3,956 dog bites reported in the five boroughs—though the statistics weren’t breed specific.
