THE RAINBOW CONNECTION
By Chelsea Rudman
The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) celebrated its 20-year anniversary last week with, unsurprisingly, a parade protesting discrimination against gays. This particular protest, however, focused on the Army’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy and the recent remarks of one Gen. Peter Pace. In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, the general called homosexuality “immoral,” ranking it on par with adultery, and said openly gay military personnel should be relieved from duty. This is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staffs. That’s, ah, the highest ranking officer in the United States Military. Protestors stopped Seventh Ave. traffic with a 100-foot rainbow flag, two high-ranking organizers were arrested, and Gov. Jim McGreevey made a guest appearance. So I’d say the parade was a success—except Pace still holds his post. Damn. Better luck next time, guys.
