Little Britain in the Big Apple

Some nostalgic Britons are trying to stake an English foothold in their former colony. A recently launched online petition hopes to convince City Hall of a pressing need for a “Little Britain” section of New York. Sponsored by Virgin Atlantic and the restaurant Tea and Sympathy, the website, CampaignForLittleBritain.com, spotlights a stretch of Greenwich Avenue in the West Village as the potential home of Gotham’s newest cultural community. The debate throws fuel on an ongoing New York versus London feud for urban supremacy, but organizers see some practical rationality: A dedicated neighborhood might bolster investments from local Englishmen and would even help ameliorate confusion between Greenwich Street and Greenwich Avenue. Seems like an awfully drastic measure to ensure that some befuddled tourists don’t miss a dinner reservation.
