Sad Dad Is A Cad

On March 8, a deadly Bronx fire left nine children and one woman dead. The victims were all members of two immigrant families from Mali, who had been living together in the row house. The media followed Moussa Magassa, one of the grieving fathers, as he put his family members to rest according to his native custom. If you followed the story, you might have read publications casually mention Magassa’s second wife, but, last week, the infinitely creative New York Times spun this man’s loss into a story about New York’s hidden culture of immigrant polygamy. In fact, both of Magassa’s wives survived the flames, so he still ranks among New York’s thousands of immigrants who, according to the Times, furtively practice this tradition. The paper notes that polygamy is linked to various bad, bad things, from female genital mutilation and domestic violence to crowded housing (though that last one’s not unlike the rest of us New Yorkers). So, from heart-broken father to misogynist, Magassa took a mighty fall in the eyes of the media. We wonder what will be “uncovered” next—his secret taste for human flesh, or maybe just an unusual love of teddy bears?
