HAILING IN THE HINTERLANDS
By Doug Black
All outer-borough New Yorkers may soon be able to delete that car service from your cell phones. City Hall is considering a $3 million plan to stake yellow cab dispatch stations near dense transit hubs in all four other boroughs. Proponents expect the addition to greatly increase the ease of travel in some of NYC’s less-populated business hubs. The measure is opposed by Mayor Bloomberg, as well as the livery cab service, which currently enjoys a monopoly on Gotham’s outskirts. But while convenience is important, there are also legal implications at hand. Apparently, it’s currently illegal to hail one of the existing livery cars while it’s on the street, which already makes a good number of bridge-and-tunnel residents accessories to crime.
