Mayor Bloomberg recently showed his appreciation for the city’s underpaid immigrants the only way he knows how: by issuing a legal mandate punishable with steep fines. The new safety regulations penned in City Council force bicycle delivery workers to use helmets and require businesses to display multilingual signs bearing bike safety laws. After signing the bills, Bloomberg explained that the measures were designed to “help protect our city’s hard-working delivery personnel, many of whom are immigrants” and who represent “the backbone of our city’s workforce.” Of course, businesses are required to foot the bill for the helmets and signage, but any peeved owners need to keep in mind that this act of administrative affection comes straight from the legislative heart.
