SEA ESCAPE

By Doug Black

Mayor Bloomberg is pushing an unlikely proposal repellent to both those with a fear of flying as well as those who suffer from seasickness. Amidst a number of strategies aimed to ameliorate the long waits and congestion at local airports, is a plan to turn city waterways into makeshift runways by using seaplanes. The use of commercial hydroplanes hasn’t graced the Big Apple since the 1940s, but Bloomberg sees it as a viable option. Of course, since seaplanes would still jockey for the same airspace as conventional planes once they’re airborne, delays would still be a problem, but there’s nothing quite like the music of twin engines screaming out of the East River.
