SHUNS GUNS
By Christine Werthman
It seems logical that cops in the United States would have access to information about the origins of an illegal gun—what with them having to solve crimes and all—but alas, logic does not always reign supreme in government. Since Congress passed it in 2003, the Tiahrt Amendment has restricted police access to gun trace data. The law has Mayor Bloomberg and his coalition of 214 other mayors nationwide calling “foul.” Mayors Against Illegal Guns began in 2006, and since then, the group has campaigned against keeping the information on where an illegal gun is originally bought and sold a secret. Last week at an event in Jersey City, the group unveiled an anti-Tiahrt Amendment video (www.protectpolice.org). The spot calls on Congress to repeal the Amendment, and both Republicans and Democrats are joining the coalition’s fight. But of course, the NRA refuses to see the need for any gun control, even the illegal kind and are peeved that Bloomberg is allegedly targeting gun-toting Americans and riding on the coattails of the Virginia Tech massacre—even though the coalition has been fighting the Tiahrt Amendment since 2006. But never mind the facts, NRA; Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!
