New York's Depravest

Everyone loves a kooky nickname—except for the top brass of the New York Fire Department, apparently. For years, city firefighters have donned specialized patches representing each individual house with a name. For example, Manhattan’s Engine 10 is aptly dubbed the “Ten House” and Coney Island goes by the “Kings of Neptune.” But a number of recent indiscretions have lead some to call for regulation on the patches. It seems the fiery guys at Bronx Engine 75, formerly known as the “Animal House,” tried to cover up accusations of having sex with women in the firehouse, and Staten Island’s affectionately nicknamed “Southern Comfort” was involved in a booze-fueled brawl. Now, new departmental restrictions require patches to undergo an official assessment before being donned, and some houses are already being asked to change their names. All this criminal mischief kind of makes you wonder what kind of transgressions forced Red Hook’s “Happy Hookers” to retire their wily play on words.
