The Democratic National Committee last week fired off a press release asserting that Americans are rejecting hopefuls from the GOP and “embracing” the field of Democratic candidates. It blasted Rudy Giuliani for refusing to comment on the president’s “failed Iraq policy,” and for saying he couldn’t evaluate how well either the 10-week troop buildup or the rebuilding of Iraq was working. But, surprise, Giuliani can still get some love in liberal, anti-war, Democrat-leaning New Jersey. According to an April 19 Quinnipiac University poll, Garden State voters favor the former New York City mayor over any Democratic candidate, which means a lot considering Jersey hasn’t supported a Republican presidential candidate in nearly 20 years. Although it’s not all that shocking considering Giuliani’s a fierce homeland security advocate, pro-choice and supportive of gay rights—well, at least he used to be supportive of gay rights before he pulled a 180 on the issue, recently admitting to the New York Sun that he’s against civil unions and believes marriage is between a man and a woman. Sure, coming out against same-sex marriage and civil unions will win him some support among the conservative base, but it could very well cost him more than a few votes in gay-friendly Blue Jersey.
