Remember Staten Island, the oft-forgotten borough thanks to that traumatizing ferry ride across troubled waters? Well, Islanders may soon be relying on their Jersey neighbors to get them to the mainland. Councilwoman Christine Quinn announced last week that $350,000 has been allocated to the Staten Island Development Corp. to study the feasibility of linking the borough to the Hudson-Bergen line of the NJTransit system via a West Shore light rail, placing Islanders in Bayonne in only 55 minutes! But you’ll have to wait another five years for construction to begin (if ever). The study will allow Staten Island to apply for federal mass transit aid, and the projected cost is about $1 billion—a small price to pay for freedom.
