Guard Cab

Ever resourceful Con Edison has hired livery cabs to guard stray voltage areas that can deliver lethal shocks to unsuspecting pedestrians, the Daily News reports. Apparently, there are so many hot spots that Con Ed can’t guard them all with its own vehicles, let alone fix them in a timely fashion. So the livery cabs stakeout clearly marked danger sites 24-7, with a sign reading, “A stray voltage hazard was discovered here. The coned/taped off area contains an extremely dangerous electrified object or structure. I am unable to move my vehicle because I am guarding this coned/taped off area from pedestrians.” Mellifluous, huh? Since the effort began six months ago, about 1,000 livery cab drivers have been hired to guard the 1,500 hot spots discovered in the first four months of this year. By our calculations, that means that only a measly 500 hot spots are guarded by Con Ed’s own; or, a whopping 500 go unguarded. Back in 2005, Con Ed agreed to spend about $10 million on various safety programs after Jodie Lane, 30, was killed when she stepped on the metal cover of a utility box in the E. Village while walking her dogs. It seems some of that money went to the livery cab drivers, but unfortunately, even they couldn’t protect two dogs that were dealt a dose of stray voltage this past February: Bob, who was killed, presumably by electrocution, and an unidentified canine who was shocked by a piece of scaffolding but survived.
