Thousands of immigrants rallied in Lower Manhattan Tuesday, May 1, for International Workers’ Day. No, they weren’t there for free handouts; they were there to demand immigration policy reform in the United States. The White House would like to sell three-year work visas to illegal immigrants for $3,500, but then require them to return home to apply for U.S. residency (after paying an additional $10,000 in fines). Critics point out that such a plan would break up law-abiding, hard-working families who contribute to our country’s economy. The May Day demonstrators marched from Washington Square to Union Square, waving placards that read, “Can you prove your parents had documents?” As the protestors marched down Broadway, the NYPD ironically attempted to keep the demonstrators from crossing over the parade’s borders. In a related story, Detroit rockers The White Stripes released their much-anticipated new single “Icky Thump” last week. The song’s lyrics echo the protesters’ sentiments, asking, “Americans…why don’t you kick yourself out, you’re an immigrant too?” Bet you never thought of that. Unfortunately, guilty White Stripes fans were unavailable for comment.
