Carbon-Hated

On May 9, a party hyping one of New York’s hottest new trends—green-ness—will go down the E. River. Solar One, a “Green Energy Arts and Education Center,” will host its annual Revelry by the River gala celebrating the city’s green building movement. Turner Construction Company and the U.S. Green Building Council will be honored for their “pivotal roles” in developing and promoting environmentally friendly edifices. Under Mayor Bloomberg’s recently unveiled PlaNYC initiative, the city has allocated $3 million from its budget for Solar One to build NYC’s first carbon neutral building, which “will generate more energy than it consumes through utilizing energy efficient and sustainable technologies such as geothermal wells, building- integrated photovoltaic panels, solar hot water, day-lighting strategies [and] rainwater collections,” according to the center. We’re not exactly sure what all of that means, but anything that will help reduce our odds of swimming in glacier water 30 years from now sounds good to us. NYC hosts the C40 Large Cities Climate Summit from May 14-17, which the mayor has convened to promote the reduction of urban carbon emissions.
