SAFETY FIRST

On May 22, our fair city signed a seven-year contract with Verizon Business that will upgrade and enhance the 911-response system. For a mere $195 million, the new-and-improved system is expected to be up and running by 2008. Verizon Business has provided 911 services to New York since 1968, but now they will be monitoring and running technical support 24/7, prompting questions as to the hours they kept before.
Meanwhile, Con Edison has teamed up with the Department of Homeland Security to bring us the $39.9 million Project Hydra (insert fanfare here). This “Secure Super Grid” is a four-year project intended to protect the city against blackouts, power surges and, of course, terrorist attacks—mainly in the financial district. According to Wall Street & Technology, our newfound safety will increase our electric bills by 11.6 percent come next April. But that’s a small price to pay for freedom.
