CLEAN HOUSE

By Kari Milchman

Last week, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz followed in the mass-firing footsteps of State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and sent nine members of Community Board 6 packing. Just a little spring-cleaning, or something a bit more politically motivated? It seems all nine ex-members had voted to condemn the Atlantic Yards project last September, while Markowitz has long been a huge proponent of the plan to bring an NBA arena and 16 skyscrapers to Prospect Heights. New York City’s 59 community boards are made up of 50 volunteer members, either appointed by borough presidents directly or at the recommendation of local city council members. While they are fairly influential in determining the character of their own neighborhoods, the state eventually approved the controversial project by developer Forest City Ratner last December. Many of the canned long-time board members had sought reappointment, though predictions had indicated that the bloodletting would be much more severe come term renewal time.
