Tap-tastic

The city will spend $700,000 this year to promote our tap water, which is a lot better for you than the bottled water industry would have you believe: New York is one of only five cities with a federal waiver stating that we don’t need to filter the water supply...because it’s already clean. In July, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and the Health Department will pay to line subways and bus stops with 1,400 ads telling you to “get your fill.” This is only a few weeks after some city restaurants, like Mario Batali’s Del Posto, announced that they’ll no longer serve bottled water in an effort to be more eco-friendly. Americans drank 27.6 gallons per capita of bottled water last year, releasing a whole bunch of nasty carbon dioxide due to its shipping and packaging. Of course, don’t expect the city’s fast-food eateries to hop on the bottle-ban band wagon—they’ve recently received an extension that will allow them to wait until the fall to comply with the new regulation requiring them to put calorie information on their menus as prominently as item prices, so it’ll still be a while before they move on from fighting to save New Yorkers’ bloated waistlines to fighting to save the environment.
