CRIME BLOTTER
Books, Booze and Banditry
By Doug Black
Stealing cash is the most obvious way to turn a buck, but some locals choose to focus on more unlikely spoils. A pair of studious thieves got busted fleecing the Queens College bookstore on July 17. Johnny Lopez, 20, and Miguel Paredes, 26, had previously stolen $15,000 worth of school textbooks, and employees alerted police when they tried to sell some of them back. They were later arrested and relieved of their hot books, which likely taught them at least one important lesson: Never return to the scene of your crime.
On the very same day, a thirsty Staten Island resident was caught illegally stocking up on his favorite beverage. At the crack of dawn, Raymond Rosario, 38, was busy carting out a dozen 12-packs of Heineken from a Graniteville ShopRite when a security guard noticed the heist. He quickly alerted authorities, who later charged Rosario with petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and a peculiar obsession with Dutch beer.
