21ST C. SUBWAYS

By Kari Milchman

Those of you who get your jollies by teetering over the edge of the subway platform to catch a glimpse of the next oncoming train will have to look elsewhere (perhaps start shaving with those 16-blade razors?). Transit officials say that a brand spankin’ new real-time train information system will be tested at 23 stations along the Manhattan-to-Canarsie line in a few weeks. This $14 million technology will outfit the platforms with digital screens on which waiting New Yorkers can read the time when the next train will be approaching. The fancy system was supposed to be up and running last July; L train riders experienced numerous disruptions to their service each weekend this summer due to preparatory wiring and construction. Another version should run on all 157 stations of the numbered lines some time in the future. First the touch-free subway pass trial, now this new fangled contraption that tells the time. The exciting implications of such advancements are boundless—next thing you’ll know we’ll have cushions on the seats!
