CRIME BLOTTER
Unlawful COPS
By Doug Black
If Al Sharpton has taught us anything in the aftermath of Sean Bell’s violent death, it’s that cops aren’t above the law. As if to reinforce this belief, a Jersey City cop with a penchant for booze behind the wheel is apparently responsible for a recent tragic car accident. While driving under the influence on a harrowing strip of the Pulaski Skyway, Kevin Freibott, 38, caused a horrific collision that put a mother in critical condition and eventually killed her 2-year-old son. Freibott, who previously had his license suspended for drunk driving, also had six other driving violations on his lengthy record. He immediately pled not guilty to the offense and was released on bail for $50,000, though he was suspended without pay. But after the young boy died, Freibott’s charge was raised to aggravated manslaughter and his bail to $350,000. If convicted he could face 30 years in prison.
A rookie NYPD officer was also caught for a less catastrophic, though most unprofessional offense. Chris Hanson was nowhere to be found when David Mena, 25, was caught in an MSNBC-like sexual predator sting. The cop was having sexually explicit Internet conversations and sending naked pictures of himself to what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl. Unfortunately for Mena, he was actually chatting it up with an undercover Suffolk County detective. Upon being charged, the freshman officer wisely retired from the force, capping off his perverted career at one brief month.
