Brian Posehn began his career doing stand up in the early ’90s in scenic Sacramento, Calif. Since then, he’s gone from being “that guy on that show” to becoming a household name among comedy fans, heavy metal maniacs and super-huge nerds. He has 100,000 MySpace friends to prove what I just wrote.

He headlines Comix this weekend and will be on the road until production of The Sarah Silverman Program heats up again in April, where he acts gay for pay as a character named Brian, one of Silverman’s next-door neighbors.

A decade ago when we thought of nerds, Steve Urkel came to mind. Are there people who are still keeping nerds down?

I kind of don’t get the question. I don’t think Steve Urkel really hurt actual smart people. Is that what you were going for?

I don't know. I guess we should change topics though. You were at SXSW, right? Did you see any bands there?
Yeah, but not anybody anyone would know unless they were metal fans. This band Municipal Waste, I really love, I got to see them for the first time. They were amazing. Straight up throwback to the late ’80s—my favorite time.

Are you strictly into metal? You don’t ever listen to smooth jazz or something?

I like good music. There aren’t a lot of mainstream bands that’ve won me over in the past couple years. I also don’t really follow any style outside of metal. I don’t have the patience to listen to college rock.

What are you currently working on? Is it mostly The Sarah Silverman Program?

We go back to work the third week of April.

Were you pushed back by the writers strike?

We were supposed to be shooting the first or second week of February. I also had a film project I had to put my pen down for, but I’m back to work on that.

I wrote a comic book last year with my friend Gerry Duggan called The Last Christmas and we’re developing that with producers. It was originally a script before it was a comic book. It was such a crazy idea, and nobody wanted to make it, so we decided to self-publish it—make it a comic book first—and that got interest from people because they could see it on the page.

Speaking of your role on Sarah Silverman, I read in an interview with Steve Agee that he’s proud to bring attention to non-stereotypical gays.

Oh yeah, for sure! Me, too. We’ve had so many guys send us emails and tell us they’re so happy to see a different portrayal. I kind of didn’t expect that. We were just doing what was funny and pure.

Did you ever expect to have over 100,000 MySpace friends?

[laughs] When I first started MySpace, it was mostly for just my friends. But then I saw some other comics—what they were able to do as far as give fans a place to find them and communicate with them and see their schedules—it’s unbelievable. It really helped me because, before MySpace, I was kind of that guy you’ve seen in those things. And then, once I put my clips up and my picture next to my name, it really helped.

Were you involved with this season of Human Giant?

Yeah. I had a blast. Those guys are like the coolest guys. Their head writer is a friend of mine, Tom Gianas, whom I’ve known for years. It reminds me a lot of Mr. Show—not only in tone, but in the way they get things done.

So you’d work on just a specific sketch?

We’d come in for just a couple of days in a week and pitch the first day. Depending on how many ideas they liked, you’ll go on to get to work on them. If you didn’t get a pitch approved, you’ll get assigned to somebody else’s pitch.

Are you going to be involved with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross' new series?

Not in the pilot. But I would expect a call when they go to series, for sure; I have a lot of fun writing with both those guys.

Great. Is there something else I should ask?

I didn’t know where I was going with it anyway.

I get called on it now, where people are like, “Look dude, you’re no longer a nerd. You’re a married guy; you may have nerdy likes or whatever, but you don’t deal with ridicule from day to day.” That’s mostly true, but I still kind of hold on to it. In the new act, I’m getting beyond that, it’s about something else now.

Would you compare it to a rapper who starts out really raw—like the debut is all about coming from the streets—and then the follow up is about how it’s great having tons of money?

No, I wouldn’t compare it to that; my act is just really me commenting on what I’m going through. Depends on what kinds of things are happening. This time, it’s mostly about things the wife said to me.
