New Latino Sounds

Wednesday, August 9,2006

Once a year, Latin alternative musicians—those who don’t play salsas, tangos, boleros or other regional beats—come to town for a series of industry panel discussions, promotional stops and, of course, plenty of music during the Latin Alternative Music Conference. Several performances (most of them free) take place at Museo del Barrio, Central Park SummerStage and Celebrate Brooklyn! to showcase not only established acts (such as Manu Chao and former Soda Stereo frontman Gustavo Cerati) but also up-and-coming artists. Among the new acts, check out Spain’s Pinker Tones (pictured) August 3 at SOB’s, who blend electronic and acoustic sounds, and the Chilean ’60s rock-inspired Los Bunkers (August 4 at Prospect Park Bandshell). For reggaeton fans, SummerStage hosts Puerto Rico’s Calle 13 followed by the crazed dub mixes of The Mexican Institute of Sound August 5.

August 2-5. For full schedule, performance and panel locations visit www.latinalternative.com.

To keep the Latin-theme of the week, the Theater in The Park program in Queens hosts three new Latinas who showcase their talents. Brazil’s Luca Mundaca traded São Paulo for NY, where she found inspiration to write her music. Brazil, however, did serve as inspiration for Puerto Rico-born Mima, who fell in love with the rhythms of that country while she lived there as an exchange student. Finally, Mexico’s Valentina Gonzales (who now lives in San Francisco) mixes electronic, Persian, Indian and flamenco, using recorded loops to make her voice both a lead and accompanying instrument.

August 3. Queens Theatre in The Park (Main Theatre), 718-760-0064, 8, $15-$20.
